CIFOR

The Center for International Forestry Research, http://www.cifor.org, advances human wellbeing, environmental conservation and equity by conducting research to inform policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. We are one of 15 centres within the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our headquarters are in Bogor, Indonesia, and we have offices in Asia, Africa and South America. CIFOR is looking for a Research Officerwho shares our mission and our commitment to professionalism, innovation, impact and collaboration. One of CIFOR’s strategic research subcomponents is “Enhancing the role of forests in climate mitigation”. The Research Officer will be part of the Governance/climate team that works on the first module (component) of CIFOR’s “Global Comparative Study (GCS) on REDD+”. REDD+ is in its infancy, so good practices will be continuously evolving. The first module of GCS analyses how national processes that formulate and implement REDD+ policies are accounting for diverse interests at all levels. It also analyses whether the resulting outcomes are effective, efficient and equitable while also producing co-benefits, thus meeting the 3E+ criteria. To analyse national REDD+ strategies, CIFOR researchers have developed five work modules: a country profile, a media-based discourse analysis, a policy network analysis, a REDD+ policy content analysis, and a fifth flexible module for specific policy studies that respond to single country research needs. The study of national processes is underway in nine countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania and Vietnam. Partial analysis is taking place in three additional countries: Burkina Faso, Mozambique and Papua New Guinea. The Research Officer will, among others, do data analysis (network and text analysis), oversee the development of and maintain a database containing the data obtained from interviews and surveys in association with the global comparative work on REDD governance and maintain appropriate communications with key stakeholders and partners. The Research Officer should have a Masters degree in social science or other related discipline, and have knowledge and good understanding of climate change mitigation issues especially REDD+. We are looking for a candidate with strong computer skills in access database management, social network analysis programs (preferably UCINET) and text analysis (preferably MaxQData, Atlas). The Research Office is competent in personal organization and priority setting, has the ability to work effectively under time pressure and manage multiple priorities. The candidate would be fluent in written and spoken English.
