National Agriculture Value Chain Advisor (Consultant): Indonesia Programme Development Background SNV is an international not-for-profit development organization that works in 36 of the poorest countries around the world covering water and sanitation, agriculture and energy. In agriculture, SNV works with smallholder farmers, pastoralists and forest-dependant communities to provide innovative, market-based solutions to the issues of sustainable markets, food security and climate change - thus contributing to equitable economic development and making markets work effectively for the rural poor. SNV uses two main approaches to its work in the agriculture sector, value chain development and Inclusive Business. The inclusive Business approach is defined as profitable and sustainable entrepreneurial initiatives that seek to contribute to poverty reduction by including lower-income communities within the value chains of companies as employees, suppliers, consumers or distributors, generating a win-win situation. SNV has implemented over 130 successful Inclusive Businesses around the world, in agri-business (dairy, spices, cocoa, cereals, vegetables, aquaculture, etc.), financial services, ICT, nutritional supplements, amongst others, which have generated a sustainable impact worldwide. SNV is currently establishing a presence in Indonesia and is seeking the services of a consultant that can assist the programme development in agriculture and inclusive business. Assignment Objectives The overall objective is to support SNV to develop a viable agriculture programme in Indonesia. This will build on an initial scoping study that has already been conducted. The specific objectives of the assignment are to: * To work on pilot project in the dairy sector in East Java * To establish relations and contacts with national and local partners in the selected geographical areas * To conduct research and provide information and data necessary for formulating realistic and viable proposals. * To support SNV’s work more broadly as required Duty Station Jakarta with frequent travel to regional areas. Selection Criteria * A university degree in agriculture, economics, agricultural economics, agribusiness, agronomy, rural development, business management or other relevant discipline * A minimum of 5 years experience working in value chain development in Indonesia, preferably with experience in more than one of the following sectors: dairy, coffee, spices, cocoa, seaweed and aquaculture * Excellent communication skills in English and proven experience in proposal development, report writing and monitoring and evaluation * Excellent skills in using MS Office computer applications * Results orientated and entrepreneurial attitude Timing The contract will be for 110 days starting in August 2012 and finishing in December 2012 with the potential for an extension.
